Shamu (The Mom Song)
When I was younger I used to call my mom Shamu. Pretty great nickname, right? “Hey mom, I love you, but you remind me of a giant marine mammal!” No, I’m just kidding. That’s not right. I didn’t call her Shamu because she’s as big as a killer whale, she’s not. I called her Shamu because she’s black with white spots.
It is true that the nickname came from Sea World’s orca named Shamu, but the reason for the nickname has nothing to do with Shamu being a whale. If I remember correctly, when I was younger (5-6 years old?) my mother and I used to cuddle together and watch TV. (Pause for a collection of “awwwws”) At the time there was a commercial advertising that Shamu had a baby, aptly named baby Shamu. So she became Shamu and I became baby Shamu. That is how the nicknames came to be. Shamu and baby Shamu could have been neematoads and the nicknames still would have stuck because one was the mommy and one was the baby. To further corroborate my prodigious ability to recall random memories from my early childhood, I just checked Wikipedia and it says that the Shamu Show at Sea World from 1989-1991 was called the “Baby Shamu Celebration”.
The whole point of this is that today is my mom’s birthday. So here is a silly/cute song I wrote for her. Enjoy!!
